This production, initiated and filmed in China, traces the musical journeys of leading Chinese composers Luo Zhongrong (1924-) and Wang Xi-lin (1937-), who represent the generation before such esteemed composers as Tan Dun and Chen Yi. It follows their lives through the Chinese Civil War, the formation of the People's Republic of China, the Cultural Revolution and until the present time. This production features the US Premiere performance of Wang Xi-Lin's Quartet (2002) for violin, cello, clarinet and piano; and the World Premiere performance of Luo Zhongrong's String Quartet No.4 (2007).

This important musical and event in New York City includes rare performances of the composers' works, filmed interviews with the composers and visual documentary footage from Chinese history, particularly from the Cultural Revolution.

In January 2009 William Lane and award-winning Chinese film director Li Guang travelled to Beijing to interview both these composers in their homes. These interviews provided intriguing conversations, insights into their music and their lives during many historical moments in Chinese history. Audiences in New York City will be given a rare treat to discover new music and stories that are little known outside China.More Information
